Janakpur Women Development Centre is situated in the south of Nepal, the Terai, in the Mithila region. Many centuries ago Mithila was a prosperous kingdom with a longstanding cultural tradition. At important events, like marriages and religious festivals, the Mithila women paint the mud walls of their homes with pictures based on the Ramayana and lately also on daily life. Nowadays they also paint on handmade paper and on fabric.
This provides Mithila women with an income to support their families. The Janakpur Women Development Centre encourages them to develop their skills and preserve the tradition. They also provide specific courses like literacy classes and management training. They call it 'Empowerment through tradition'. In our shop we sell their paintings on Lokta paper and felt animals. By buying you support them and their families.
