The Sapana Women Skills Development Project is established on the southern plains of Nepal, the Terai. Sapana is situated in Sauraha, very close to the famous Chitwan National Park, the oldest national park in Nepal, founded in 1973. Although the park generates tourisme and employment, only a limited amount of people profit from that. The Sapana project therefor teaches women skills to provide an income for themselves and their families and make them more independent.
Sapana means 'dream' in Nepalese.
Sapana Women Skills Development Project is part of Sapana Village Impact (SVSI), a non-profit organisation that aims to alleviate poverty of the local people. Among the other projects are a school, microfinance and help to earthquake victims. Also part of SVSI is Sapana Village Lodge, an eco resort close to the entrance of Chitwan National Park. The projects of SVSI all benefit from the revenues of the lodge.
